REPORT OF FIELDVISIT TO GUIDANCE AND
COUNSELLING CELL
On February 2, 2017 our college
Delhi Institute of Rural Development organized a visit to the NCERT campus for
the assignment of field visit related to teacher as a counselor. All the
students gathered in the main campus of NCERT situated in Hauz khas. All the
faculty members of our college were also invited with the B.Ed. Students. The
visit was specially organized for B.Ed. Students. At the onset students were
introduced to the NCERT campus of studies related to various field of science
and arts. It also holds various vocational courses also for student’s
interested vacation and open schooling.
We visit to the NCERT Department
of Educational Psychology & Foundations of Education, National Council of
Educational Research and Training, Sri
Aurobindo Marg, New Delhi-110016 at 5th floor. Where
we got the information related to guidance and counselling sell functioning.
Functions
of the department in this area are as follows: –
- Capacity
building of guidance personnel at state level.
- Developing
materials – print, audio and video for training in guidance and
counseling.
- Maintaining
database of NGOs/Organizations/State departments for implementing guidance
and counseling programs/ services.
- Conducting
status surveys/researches/ follow-up studies.
- Strengthening
of Guidance and Counseling Resource Centre for extension activities.
After
that all the students went to guidance and counseling department on fifth floor
where Dr. Shradhha Dhiwal and Dr. Sushmita Chakrborty delivered a lecture on Guidance and Counseling
in Nehru Bhawan building, New Delhi. Specific meaning of guidance
and counseling told by the educationalists confirmed the Verb of word
“Guidance” – which means ordinary meaning of guidance explained by them i.e. –
Guidance- to guide, to indicate. Also explain medium of instruction,
eligibility, criteria, about internship, duration phasing, course material,
objective of the course were explained by them that diploma course was started
in 1958 and guidance was started in 1938 in the University of Calcutta. All
were so curious to know that how a teacher can act as a counselor in a class
room.
After
their lecture students asked many questions and with due regards and respect all
got satisfactory reply by those faculty members. All the students felt so
confident and lucky that they all got this wonderful opportunity to interact
with experts and also received such effective training from highly qualified
resource persons of NCERT.
After
lecture of Guidance and Counseling, a little bit discussions were held with the
students of DIRD and our questions welcomed by her and responded over whelming.
Students asked following questions like:
1. That school approaches them or they approach schools for
giving counseling.
Ma’am
replied that In NCERT’s guidance and counseling cell is only into just giving
training to trainee’s only, they are not into counseling. Simultaneously, she
added that there is trainee’s approach if schools needed.
2.
Do
counseling is provided in online mode or face to face to face mode?
They
replied: Counsellimg is provided in both modes.
3.
What are the criteria of providing counseling?
They replied:
Counselling is provided according to age, according to standard, according to
problem.
4.
Are schools inviting them to provide
counselling to their students or counselors go by themselves?
They
replied : In both
manner, schools also invite them and they also went by themselves.
5.
What types
of Equipments were available in centre?
Dr. Shradhha Dhiwal and Dr. Sushmita Chakrborty told us that
Books included educative ability tests. She explained that the first test was
made for department of Defense which was based on artificial intelligence. They
made us aware that if anybody gets 3-4 marks out of 10 will be considered as
“below category” while 6-7 marks are considered as “above category” and 8-10
are known as “superior category” as per Educative ability Test norms. They
named some tests such as “reverse progression” or “Intelligence Tests”. They
showed a book “Standard Progressive material” which was prepared by J C Raiun.
In which sets A, B, C, D and E. Basically it was to points out or to show the
way.
It
is a test of Help, Assistance or Suggestions for progress. The Synonym of “To
Guide” is laid to conduct, to regulate, to steer as to direct. She told us that
these test are very expensive and confidential and can’t be shared with all.
She informed everyone that we cannot take it to home but we can study them in
the library.
6.
How many
members are there is that particular cell and what are the minimum qualification
they would need?
She
replied that there were 35 members in the Department; Minimum qualification
should be that person should be NET qualified along with MA. Psychology
She
made us aware about the difference between Guidance and Counseling and explained
the same as pointers for better clarity of students. They explained that the
types of pupils to be counseled, lectured should be followed by explaining the
principle.
7.
What type
of problems they face during Guidance and Counseling?
She
said that guidance and counseling can be given on personal, educational as well
as on vocational problems.
8.
What type
of services they provide?
Reply
was: They trained students, trainees about how to conduct an IQ test, every
test has manual, steps of counseling as told by Dr. Shradhha Dhiwal and Dr.
Sushmita Chakrborty. Case profiles have to be prepared by counselors. A
checklist is provided to students / children in which approx. 200 types of
questions are expected to be answered. It helps in identifying the ability of a
student. Information like Structure, duration of course, other expenses,
admission procedure, intake, reasoning on books.

Do they
keep records and how they keep records?
Reply
was: reply was same that they are only into providing training; they
don’t directly deal with counselee. But the trainees deal with them and make a
case study to collect proper information about the case.
10.
Follow up done by them?
Reply
was: they do not go to them. But, yes they follow the case until the counselee
is satisfied.
11.
Is there any help line number?
She
answered No such help line number is available. But, all the counsellors give
their personal mobile number to the counselee so that he/ she can be in direct
contact with them whenever they need to talk to them.
12.
Any legal action taken for any special
problem?
She
replied that the trainee’s use observation techniques and follow-up after
counseling. There are no legal laws under this guidance and counselling
procedure available in India. Department of education psychology foundation
gave training to trainees about how to talk to students, learning centre in the
class, concentrate in the class, teach how to organize workshop on Child Abuse,
Violence and suicide etc.
After
that enlightening question and answer round She made us aware about the
difference between Guidance and Counseling and explained the same as pointers
for better clarity of students. They explained that what all types of pupils to
be counseled. In last they also discussed principles of teaching,
characteristics of good and effective counselling Directive, Non-Directive and
Elective counselling and other type of counselling explained by educationists
in detail.
Conclusion
With
the educational visit to NCERT students learnt to sensitize with the need and
relevance of guidance and counselling .To analyze the role of teacher in it.
The teacher must be able to make students adjust according to the provided
environment. She/he should know the coping skills, how to manage interpersonal
relation with skills, through emotions and intelligence and must possess the
ability to listen alternatively to the problems of the students. Teacher must
have skills to develop skill of negotiating, self discovery, decision making,
problem solving with patience & empathy in student. Finally we can say that
it was an enriched lecture and expert’s demonstration of skills, knowledge was
very fruitful and very helpful in understanding the concept of Guidance and
Counselling.
